My hex

So I've had this small 5 gallon hex for several years and it spent the last 2 in a closet. I decided about 4 months ago to refill it and use as an "overflow" tank for my extra plants. I replaced the incandescent bulb with a compact flourescent screw-in from walmart. I've got some rotala growing in there for now but I'm wondering what else to put in here. I have an oto and a small amano shrimp with two glass shrimp in there for now. I am interested in the red cherry shrimp or maybe a dwarf puffer, or possibly a few endlers or small feeder guppies. I can't make up my mind so any suggestions would be awesome. I'd attach a pic but for some reason all of my pictures are too large. 1024x780 is max and mine are like 2480x2250. The only way to get them accepted is to crop them down to such a blown up looking pic. Any ideas on how to fix this would also be great.

Are you using Windows XP?

If so try this little app...Its an Image Resizer...Once installed all you have to do is right click any pic and there will be a choice added to the right click menu to resize. From there you can choose small, medium, large...Great little application.

Hope it helps.

Any of the livebearers I would just do males or the tank would be overloaded. I don't know how a puffer would do with the shrimp as I have never kept them. You could also do a colony of small killies. You could keep 6 -8 of those in a 5 gal. Or with endlers or feeder guppies you can do 10 males. Of course there is always the old standby of a betta or dwarf guarami.

NO WAY 10 MALES IN A 5G HEX! maybe 3! hexs dont give much swimming space.

With endlers its possible as all males are quite small. The same would be with male feeder guppys as they aren't that big.

I have a 75gal with over 400 endlers in it right now. All are doing fine.

There is a huge difference between a 5Hex and a 75. You can easily overcrowd a 75 and not have an issue as you have a large surface area which just isnt there in a 5 hex.

Also, a Dwarf Guarami would never last long in any 5 gal

A puffer would be a bad idea with shrimp. I had to add a puffer in my 29 gallon tank when I had a nice colony of cherries rolling...and I no longer have my cherries in there....It only took a few days. As for fauna for your hex..you could try some galaxy rasboras, or some other dwarf rasbora or tetra even.

Yeah the hex5 sucks. One of the worst ideas for a fish tank. What about breeding some cherry shrimp? I have no experience with them. Would this work?

Your 5Hex is perfect for 10 male Endlers.
They will be active and show off that little tank like nothing else can do.

Now if you were wanting to raise Endlers in it, that could be a mistake as it would be overpopulated to quickly.

I have Endlers in 5 gal tanks and they do well in them. Very adaptable little fish they are. There is a lot of misinformation about Endlers out there.

BTW I have Endlers in containers from 2gal up to 55gal tanks, and in 30,000 gallon ponds. They do well in all of them.

Here's what I've changed since my last update. I got rid of the eclipse hood /filter/light. I added a 27w PC desk lamp and an Azoo palm filter. I also removed all the rotala and replaced it with Lilaeopsis brasiliensis. I found a single small snail in my other tank and moved it to the hex. Within two weeks I had around 50 or so small snails all over the tank. I'm still looking for a small piece of driftwood to add in here, but I'd also like to eventually add a dwarf puffer. I'm hoping to let the snails grow for another month or two before I get the puffer. Let me know what you all think!
