Lightbulb Thank you m.lemay and Rex Grigg!!! *Newbs confused about ferts, read these guides!!*

Alright, I've been researching high-light tanks and fert dosing for a week or two now and I just didn't get it.

Every FAQ I found on the net, and the various threads I searched, I couldn't get passed the unfamiliar terms, and lack of detail.

I learned what macros were, but not where to find them or how/much to dose. I kept getting frustrated and wanted to give up on trying to go high-light and just be happy with yet another low-tech tank.

I didn't give up though and decided tonight was the night I HAD to figure it out.

I found the guide to ferts by m.lemay and also read through Rex Grigg's guide. m.lemay's was detailed and provided me with EGC where I placed an order for dry ferts a little while ago.

Rex's simple to the point dosing guidelines finally gave me the kick to the balls I needed to grasp how much to dose, why to dose that much, etc.. etc..

Here's a link to m.lemay's guide

Welcome to PTF! I know how frustrating it can be trying to be "informed" when first starting. Rex's guide is also the first one that made sense to me. I buy all of my dry Ferts from him, guess it's a loyalty thing but I've been very satisfied.

Best advice anyone gave me when I was setting up my 30G @ 3.75 WPG was to stuff if full of fast growing stem plants at first to out compete the Algae until the tank balances out. These plants suck up lots of nutrients.

GL and HTH.

Rex might come off a bit hard sometimes but you can knock his knowledge and advice.

Sometimes the best advice can be found outside of books and magazines.

Thanks Todd! Good to be here, I've always loved planted tanks, but my low-tech ones always melted after a while because eventually you need to dose a little bit of ferts and add C02, liquid or gas.

So, I've always aspired to a high-light setup, especially seeing all the amazing tanks here at TPF. I'm on my way as soon as my ferts arrive!

One really cool thing is that I'm just across town from Fish Etc.. and I've talked with Cooper about planted tanks before, he's a cool guy.

Yeah, I laughed quite a bit while going through the guide.

I agree. I've yet to read a book about aquaria because I prefer to get info through sharing with fellow aquarists.

Welcome indeed! Also the sheer volume of information when a beginner starts trying to do research on the subject. The fact that so much of it is dated, or proven wrong or no longer relevant, yet is still out there doesn't help. Not to mention the vastly differing opinions of various mavens of course.

Yes, we love Rex, curmudgeon that he is .

Sláinte!
