Tank Concept

I'm thinking about replacing my 2 10gals with a 20L. If I can get my hand on some celestial pearl danios, I'd like to try my hand at breeding. Do you think it would work if I made a 20L into a celestial pearl danio/RCS tank? At this point, I don't really care if there are any shrimp casualties, my RCS tank is overrun. I'd be more concerned about RCS eating eggs or fry.

too small IMO, but you can always try with a lot of moss there. CPLs are egg scatterer. the problem will be your filter as these fish are really small.

When you say too small, are you referring to tank size, or the fish? I'd be going with a sponge filter. Does anyone know where to get good info on breeding these fish? The best resource I have found is the celestial pearl danio forum, which doesn't have any articles, just forum posts.

We have a tank that used to be a RCS tank, that we then moved our CPDs into. Needless to say, there were shrimp left, and though it can't be proven, there weren't any new babies seen when there were shrimp in there. Can't be sure that that shrimp ate the eggs but...

In regards to other questions, we have about 10 CPDs in a 10 gallon tank, so I'm not sure when someone says that a tank is too small...

I'll ask my roommate on some breeding advice and get back to you

ETA: A few breeding tips:
Have more females than males.
Have moss or something in the tank, for them to lay eggs in.
Ours seem to do better when water hasn't gone through a water softener, I don't know if it is the salt or the TDS.
Feed them well.

We are in no way highly successful at breeding them, but we have some that have spawned and been able to raise the fry.

i meant the tank is a bit small. how many CPD are you talking about anyway? i know the fish is small and from what i've seen in stores, they're a little bit paranoid.

Dunno, maybe like 10? It will most likely be pretty heavily planted (I'm thinking some stems, naja grass, pellia, and a ton of moss, java and others.)

20L = 20 gallon long in the US.
20L = 20 Liter = 5 gal in metric countries

helps to look at the country of the poster to avoid confusion.

Oh, yes, I need to make that distinction. I am talking about a 20 gallon long, not a 20 liter tank.

oh dear my mistake, i thought about 20 liters.
with 20 gallon you can probably support 30 of them.

I'd imagine the shrimps and the parents would eat the eggs.

The only kind of breeding I've done was involuntary and a pleasant surprise. You think they'd get the eggs even in a heavily planted environment? How do these things spawn in the wild?

scatter the eggs everywhere and hope some will survive?

i'm not sure but the surviveability of spawns in nature is very small, hence explains why they lay so many eggs.
