purigen

I recently started using this product in my filtration. It seems to work great. I am wondering about its "regeneration" that Seachem states on the bottle. Does anyone regenerate his or her purigen and if so, what tips do you have when trying this? How many times have you tried this and does it change the effectiveness of the purigen? Any other tips or comment would be appreciated. So far I am very pleased with product, but as I said I have just recently started using it.

try google, it rocks! seachem purigen

http://www.seachem.com/products/prod...s/Purigen.html

Regeneration: Soak in a 1:1 bleach:water solution for 24 hours in a non-metalic container in a well ventilated area and away from children. Rinse well, then soak for 8 hours with a solution containing 2 tablespoons of ChlorGuard™, Prime™, or equivalent dechlorinator per cup of water. Rinse well. For freshwater use, soak for 4 hours with a solution containing 1 tablespoon of buffer per cup of water (Discus Buffer™, Neutral Regulator™, or Acid Buffer™). Original color and full activity should now be restored and Purigen™ is ready for reuse. Caution: some slime coat products may permanently foul Purigen™ and render regeneration difficult. Do not reuse if odor of chlorine is detectable. In case of doubt, soak beads in small quantity of water and test for residual chlorine with a chlorine test kit.

one additional note: store used packs in water when not being used in filter - or - don't let it dry out once used.

I've regenerated it several times and have been told that it can be done indefinitely (just as long as it doesn't smell like chlorine after you bathe it in either dechlorinator or Seachem's Neutral Regulator). I use a one part bleach and one part water solution and soak it for 24 hours. Then I soak it in a one liter solution of water and one tablespoon Neutral Regulator and bathe it for 8 hours. After rinsing the bag out, I smell it for any residual chlorine and if it is good I'm done. I have had to soak it twice in the bleach/water solution several times to remove the brown coloration of the Purigen.

I like this product. Especially since it can be regenerated indefinitely. And I use Seachem's The Bag to hold the Purigen since it is almost indestructible to any chemicals.

Thanks spypet. I guess I should have been more clear. I know what It says on the package about how to regenerate it. I was wondering if it really works as claimed. I was also looking for some advise and tips from those who have done this.
I was not aware that you can not let the purigen dry out before you try to regenerate it. If you do let it dry out is it then ruined?

I regenerate mine about once per Month
and retire them after at least six Months.

your results may vary depending on how
well you regenerate, and heavy you use.

I regenerate and store my packs two at a
time using any glass 26oz Pasta Sauce Jar.

Hey saltura You use seachems "the bag" correct? I got mine with no directions and it seems the top of "the bag" is open but I keep reading it uses welded re-lockable strips...
How do "you" close the top of "the bag"?

According to Seachem, the 24hr bleach soak is just a guideline--it can be dechlored once it has returned to its original color--for me, a few hours.

24hr Bleach Soak--Purigen....?

I also add the acid buffer at the same time as the dechlor---I haven't had any problems and saves some more time.

Have 2 bags setup per filter and just swap them out. Regen the dirty one and then store it wet. I used a double-ziplock setup, spypet uses jars---whatever works for you!
