Algae on Java Fern

I'm a newbie. Bought my first batch of plants a few days ago and soon discovered both plants have rampant algae growth on the inside of the bunched stalks near the bottom. I've removed some but is it better to pull it out and gut it the best I can or if I keep good parameters and a few good water changes with less lights should it just go away?

Sure it's not the roots or the baby plantlets? Is it black?

I have two things going - one looks like roots that have died while the other is what looks like green hair algae on the green leaves.

the root looking material is brownish/back

The former might be roots of baby plantlets. It is hard to say without a picture.
