Cycling question

I setup a new 20 gallon tank on Saturday. New substrate (ADA New Amazonia), new water, planted with cutoffs from my existing tank.

For the last 2 weeks I had an eheim 2213 running in parallel to my eheim 2074 with my existing tank. I moved the 2213 to my new tank.

I started on Saturday to add 20 drops of Dr. Tim's Ammonium Chloride. Ammonia went up as expected to ~2ppm. I continued Sunday and Monday morning. Last night I checked also nitrite and nitrate. Ammonia was arround 1ppm (as expected since I had added drops in the morning), but nitrite was 0 and nitrate was between 20-40ppm.

Does that mean that by using the filter from an established tank I basically quick cycled my tank?

More than likely you are. Let the ammonia run down to 0, so you should have 0/0/~40ish ammonia/nitrite/nitrate and do a big water change, around 75% to drop your nitrates to ~5-10ish. Add about 2ml of ammonia to put yourself at 3-4ppm, and wait 24 hours. If you get back to to 0/0 ammonia/nitrite then you're good to go!
