Emergency!!

i just turned on my lights today at 7 30 they had been off all day. but i found all my fish near the bottom of the tank with the color seemingly drained out of them, and 2 of my 11 neons dead. my first thought was co2 overdose but then i realized that was impossible with diy on my 75 gallon even though as im counting the bubbles im getting about 8 every 9 seconds and diffusing them thru my powerhead. but does anyone have any ideas? my nitrates and nitrites are at zero. everything is looking normal again, could it be that the fish were just resting near the bottom because the lights are out? i just bought the neons a few days ago and the rest seem ok so maybe it was just coincidence?

is anything other than CO2 getting into the tank from your DIY setup? I think people don't recommend you do DIY co2 for anything bigger than 20 gallons... anyway, with the lights out the plants can't photosynthesize, so the CO2 is getting into the tank but the plants aren't taking it and using the carbon and releasing the O2 like they would with the lights on.

but if it was the co2, they'd probably be at the top gasping for air.

so I really don't know, but it's a thought.

In addition to what Mangala said, the plants are also using what 02 is available. But again, seems like they would be at the top.

What about temp? Heat rises and all....

I once had my light timer fail on me. It didn't turn on for at least a day. I don't get to see my lit aquarium because I'm out the whole day so I'm assuming it only failed for a day. I also run pressurized co2 at a high bps. Other than the stem plants bending, everything was fine. The loss of color might have been from stress, maybe. I think the deaths were also a coincidence.

Scroll down and find "Pleistophora"

That is the description of neon tetra disease, which is not really limited to neon tetras. Doesn't sound like it, not sure what the issue is.

Fish do rest near the bottom and lose their coloration when they "sleep."

my fish do it every time i turn the lights out for more than and hour or so, they lose all their color and just lay on the bottom. They've been doing it for the 2 years I've had em. the neons probably died cause they were new...
