Help with Filter material?

I am currently running a rena filstar canister with just the black spongy material in it . My question is will adding filter fiber in addition to the stock material filter out to many nutrients ( excel, minerals, , etc..) needed by my plants? I know never to run carbon but what about multiple mechanical materials such as the above mentioned ?

Filter fiber has no adsorbent capacity. It only removes particulates, and anything that is dissolved in the water will go right through. That includes minerals and excel and fertilizer chemicals. I think it's fair to say that most people on this board run filter floss in their filters. Also, that thing about carbon isn't really true. Carbon is much better at removing dissolved organic chemicals than it is at removing cations like Ca, Mg, etc.
