Filter Media in UGF

Hey everybody, I have a question. After looking at my UGF for awhile I really wanna use it and had the thought: can I use filter media (specifically ceramic rings) in the lift tube of an UGF to really push my amount of bacteria in the tank. Could I also put carbon in a bag in the lift tubes? I was thinking ceramic rings would be better because I wouldn't have to replace them really at all.

Thoughts?

Hi gobluewolverines4,

I use UFG filters in a couple of my planted tanks and have found that with an adequate depth of medium / fine substrate, about 2" - 2.5" I have more than enough surface area for beneficial in the substrate. I have used both gravel or Montmorillonite clay as substrate materials. Adding anything in the tubes will reduce the flow of water through the substrate.
