6,500k vs. 6,700k

I'm assuming there's not much difference, but local LFS is swearing that I should replace my 6,500k bulb with a 6,700k bulb. I told them that it sounds odd because the acceptable range is 6,500k to 10,000k. Sounds like they're just after my money. What do you think?

Tell them to get bent. Your eye couldn't tell the difference 9/10 times. You might consider taking your business elsewhere.

9/10 times? I'd say 10/10 times between 6500K and 6700K.

Just a waste of money since it's such a little difference.

I knew there would be one ass that would say " I can tell, I can tell!" so i gave myself some wiggle room.

LOL.

Ultimately, between 6,500K and 6,700K ... the plants won't care. You'll be able to grow healthy plants regardless of a 200K temp difference.

I think you should find another LFS.

This place was already on the verge of losing me. I only went back to return some reef tank items that I hadn't used. Just wanted to be 100% sure since this is my first planted tank. Thanks for the input!

I feel stupid.. I grabbed a 15W bulb at petsmart for $14 without thinking. I could have gotten the same type bulb at the hardware store for $7.

They are morons just trying to make you spend money that you don't need to. Such minimal diff between those bulbs visually you wouldn't be able to tell the diff. And your plants wouldn't care in the least.
the acceptable range is more like 5000k-10,000K. So even more reason that their logic makes no sense other then to rip you off.

I've had 6700K and 12,000K bulbs that appeared identical to the eye.

I've had two 10,000K bulbs that looked entirely different (huge huge difference).

It depends on the actual phosphors in the bulb, the K rating is often just a rough, possibly made up in some instances, number that is stamped onto the bulb. many of the K values are no where near what an actual K value would be.

Even identical bulbs sometimes do not have exactly the same color, particularly with metal halide, but others as well. I have this bridge I would be willing to sell to that pet store clerk...

200K doesnt make that big a difference. i think its more important that you focus on the spectrum the bulb provides. and is also the reason behind why can look so different despite having similar kelvin ratings.

So should I look for plant specific bulbs? I've got a couple 6,500k bulbs, but I don't know what the spectrum is. Generic packaging.
