HELP! algae everywhere mmm...

Hi all, I'm trying to set up a small 12g aquapod in my bedroom as a planted tank. I don't have much experience with planted tanks, but have had quite a bit of experience with fish, as my dad breeds certain varieties. I've had my tank running for a few weeks, with some water from one of my dad's established tanks and some treated tap water. I decided to finally put some plants and I have flourite substrate roughly 1 1/2'' - 2 inches thick and a piece of driftwood and a narrow leaf java fern and some java moss which I've tied to the wood to grow. A few weeks later I notice I have some algae (not too sure the type looks darkish green/brownish and if I had to just name it from looks....hair algae? It is really fine and dangles from the edges of the wood and my fern. I got 4 amano shrimp to eat up some, and have 3 otos to deal with some algae too.

I know though that algae cannot solely be controlled by these critters as it has to do with an imbalance in the tank, and a properly balanced tank wont have this abundance of algae. I'm looking into getting some test kits and testing the waters, and maybe adding a DIY CO2 system (by the way anyuone know where i can get some co2 diffusers online near canada, the LFS don't sell the diffusers alone). But I'm kinda lost what to do to control it, I wanted to add some glossostigma elatinoides as carpet plants but want to wait till i have the system balanced. Any advice is much appreciated!!

Please list all your tank parameters: Lighting, photoperiod, any dosing, fishload, type of filter used.

CO2 might not be the problem, but then again, it could be.

Uh, is that clado?

Pick it out with your hands and rub it between your fingers. Soft and mushy, or rough like a brillo pad?

For Co2 diffusers, a great cheap option is limewood airstones.

If you add a bunch of fast growing stem plants ( you can do a search around here to see some different options there) it will likely out compete the algae.

How long are you leaving your lights on? With undemanding plants, 6-8 hours will be sufficient.

Also, instead of glosso, go with marselia minuta. It requires less light, and spreads really well for me.

Hope this helps.
