What is this "excel" you speak of?

I bought and use the seachem Flourish, which started working good instantly. not the same stuff? if not, why use both?

That site will explain all the different nutrients plants need to grow. Excel is one kind of fertilizer within the Seachem Flourish brand. Regular Flourish provides trace nutrients, stuff that plants need, but not in huge amounts. Flourish Excel provides a source of carbon, which comes in handy if you don't have a lot of dissolved CO2 in the tank. However, the main nutrients plants need (AKA macro nutrients) are Nitrogen, Potassium, and Phosphate. When I say main, I'm not saying that they necessarily need a ton of fertilizer. Growth is driven by light, and if you don't have that much light, fish waste may provide enough of those nutrients.

carbon is a building block for life..remember the old star trek series with James T Kirk, when aliens reduced almost everybody on board to small pyramids, and humans were called carbon based units. N P & K are the main or macro fertilizers. Oftentimes lawn fertilizers composed of this. then your trace fertilzers provide small amount of other minerals.
