Is pine wood safe?

Walking through my local ravine I found the remnants of what was once a nursery pine. I like the looks of it and want to include it in my 5.5 gallon overhaul. Is this safe?

I've been soaking the wood for several days, scrubbed it, removed the roots...

I really want to use it, but don't want to kill my fish (wild and fancy guppies).

No. Pine wood is a soft wood and therefore it will go mushy and rot in an aquarium. This is why we spend so much money on Manzanita and other hardwoods for our tanks. I just finally came to grips with the fact that large, attractive chunk of pine I had in one of my tanks was the reason the water was always so oddly colored... (not normal tannins... a weird sickly color...) and I removed it and everything is a lot clearer now, and now my angels are getting a brood to stay alive longer than a day or two *fingers crossed*

So, say no to soft woods like pine.

I agree with Mangala, but if you are determined, try the following;

before your next water change, fill a bucket with old tank water,
submerge the wood in the tank water, and wait at least 2 weeks.
if the wood gets white hairy slime on it, it's biodegrading and will
kill your fish. also note how dark the water becomes, as that will
give you an indication of how much tannins may still leech out.
biodegrading in nature does not kill fish, since there is a huge
volume of water to dilute it's effects, while a small tank cannot.
