Depending on how much you are looking to spend a Fluval 206 would be a good choice.

I have only ever had one ehiem but it is a good filter. It is not a classic it is an ecco though. It is still chugging along just fine 7 years later. I will say that I am just as happy with my aquaclears and so far with my zoomed nano.

Marineland canisters and fluval canisters are the only they sell by me, I would take either any day.

I just bought an eheim Ecco 2234 on sale at petsmart.com for $65. It's going on my 40g.

I have been researching this for a while now for a 20 gallon long. I've pretty much decided to just get a second AC20 hob instead of the expensive canister filters. Now I'm just hopping to find a good deal.

I have used the majority of canisters throughout the year, and I find Eheim is the best you can get for your money. The double tap connectors make maintenance very convenient and the free media the Eheim brings is far superior from what competing canisters have to offer.

When compared side-by- side the Eheim will shine. They come with media, some don't and that is a major expense or you accept some funky DIY solution. It is not just the flow rate but what the water actually flows through that counts. Many canisters let water bypass around the media rather than through. There are many small things that matter. Like an impeller shaft that is ceramic rather than steel. Little things that wear out but can cost you a $15-20 repair to replace the impeller. Looking at the electrical usage shows the Eheim uses far less than many. Small motors that are ineffective are not a bargain. A canister that is underpowered requires more frequent cleaning than better ones as flow drops off quicker.
Over the years, I have tried many times to save money by buying cheaper filters and have owned 15-20. I now own only four canisters and they are all Eheim.

Eheim 2213-37 will suit a 20 gallon well. It should run you no more than $90 dollars online and brings all the media you need.
