Early Xmas present

Saturday night my family had its yearly holiday party which was held at my well off uncle's house. He has a unusual tank that he keeps discus in and he just swapped tanks with a newer one. So I ended up with an acrylic tank that is approximately 36x12x6 ( about 20 gal) . My question is now what to do with it? I figure on keeping it a species tank. It will be low tech non c02. Options are a shoaling group with short carpet of something or shrimp with something like vals or crypt balansae. Any ideas what else I can do with this tank?

A species tank would be fantastic. I like Espe's Rasboras, but there are numerous species to consider. It's a very sweet by-the-way Christmas present.

After 50 years I do a lot of things right, but still get things wrong

Low tech (especially low light) and carpeting plants are usually pretty mutually exclusive, IMO.

I'm a big fan of neon/cardinal tetras and red cherry shrimp, the red and blue complements a lush green tank. You could also do a scarlet badis tank, and I've kept them in with red cherries, despite the scarlet badis being a micropredator.

10 gallon acrylic fw planted. 6 neon tetras, 1 GBR, 3 Amano shrimp, 2 nerites, 1 BNP, Eheim Classic 2211, Finnex Planted+ 17W LED, Hydor ETH 200W In-Line Heater, InkBird temp controller.

10 gallon aquaponic setup, hydroponic basil, 8 HET rasboras, RCS, red ramshorn snails.

Ok so I'm bad at eying measurements. It's actually 48x16x6 good thing is I have a single T8 fixture that originally came with my 75 tank. He gave me a spare internal filter that he wasn't using. So all I need to do now is decide on what I am putting inside it. Neons and RCS sound petty nice for this tank. Now what plants? Remember no co2 being used
