I have experience with a salt water reef and other freshwater tanks but this will be my first planted tank. I've been reading and researching and decided on this for my set up using my 54 gal corner tank...

Eco-Complete substrate with a thin first layer of florite.
CSL 30" 130 watt Moonlite PC with 6500k and 7100K bulbs.
I have another 65 PC that I can add if find that more light is needed.
Fluval 304 canister filte
150 watt heater

The plants will be your basic beginner plants like water sprite, Java fern, amazon swords, micro swords and such. My LFS has a great plant selection.

I'll also have some driftwood. One piece is an African kind (I forget the name) that I'm soaking now since it turns the water brown.

The fish will be a few angels, hatchet fish and maybe some apistogrammas.

So, does this sound OK? Any suggestions?

Thanks!!

Are you planning to have CO2 in your tank?

You could certainly skip the laterite if you are using Eco-Complete.

I've been looking into it. Would I need CO2 for 2.4 watts a gal and those plants?

Yeah! That's it. Neat looking wood but it takes forever for it to stop leeching color.
