growing HC with pebbles on top of substrate?

I was wondering if its possible to grow HC on top of my pebbles? i have eco complete below the pebbles which is about 1/2-1inch thick before the eco complete.


i didnt know i didnt need pebbles on top of substrate when i first started the tank

It should be fine as long as the roots are able to have some contact with the Eco-Complete. If you inject CO2 and dose fertilizers, it's not even strictly necessary to have a nutrient-rich substrate. I know of plenty of people that grow plants successfully with many types of standard substrates ... things like Flourite and Eco-Complete are just icing on the cake, so to speak.

Some people mix up the two as well, to have a mixture.

how big is the pebbles? finer is better for HC.

i have the smaller ones of these not the pebbles but regular gravel thing.

i had to weigh it down with couple lil piece of gravel.
