What are the advantages of Potted Crypts vs Individual plants?

I'll be starting up a 20L with a heavey planting of crypts, java Fern and java moss ... this will be for my Chocolate and Licorice Gouramis (low pH and Hardness) ... would I be best to start with Potted Crypts?

Thanks

Does this relate to your question about soil substrates? Or are you asking about keep the rockwool and plastic pots you can buy crypts in?

Sean

Aquascape? I'm a crypt farmer.

It's a fine line between fishing and standing on the shore looking like an idiot.

That IS an aquascape, it's titled "The Vacant Lot".

I don't think it would make a differance.

By potting your crypts you offer no advantages in to help them grow (assuming the mix of substrate is the same in the pots or the tank). You will however restrict their root growth, and the ability to send off runners.

You will make it easy to re-plant them though, as they will be contained.

What I think JeffreyRichard means is: is there a difference between the potted plants and the bare-root plants they commonly sell at stores and especially online. I've heard that the differene in most cases is the potted variety of Cryptocorynes are usually a little bushier. This may not always be the case though so you may want to contact the company if you're ordering the plants online. In the case of buying from a LFS, buy whichever is larger.

ahhh I got it....

ok.. usually if you are buying a "potted" crypt you are buying the plant that has been rooted in rockwool soaked in fertilizers... often, these plants are actually several smaller plants that are thriving in the nutrient rich wool.

Either way is safe to buy really.. I've had good luck with both, but I tend to get a real fast response from the potted plants when I transplant them (QUALIFIER: in my low tech, medium light, non CO2 tanks)

I like the potted Crypts because of the point brought up by Gareth, you often get more than one plant per pot!!
