20 Gallon High

Just wondering what I can do with it because I'm gonna be clearing out my convicts from that tank. It has t8 lighting and regular gravel. Fairly low tech. I dont know if I want to do shrimps plants or cool fish. Definitely on a budget...

This may or may not apply to you, but it has resounded with me as I have tried to calm my new excitement and plan properly. (I assume you have experience unlike myself. This type of advice is gold to me, as its something I'd only learn the hard way otherwise, as I am headstrong and a bit obsessive compulsive.

".....You're welcome. I know I dropped a lot onto your plate to digest. Take it slowly and understand that a planted aquarium can be as simple or as sophisticated as you want it to be. I have tanks that I rarely touch except for the universally needed weekly water changes. They also flourish, but plant growth is much slower. That isn't such a bad thing either! Sometimes having to spend 2 hours trimming a tank can be tedious and always at the wrong moment, so try to keep that in mind when planning. How ambitious you are today may change dramatically in 6 months or 2 years, and with a high growth tank will end in much frustration and pain. I guess the philosophy "know thyself" comes in here someplace ..."

Like I said, it may not apply to you, and the advice is simple enough but it has helped me. I honestly think high tech / shrimp rancher looks like loads of fun, but I may not have the time or resources for it. More reading/planning required.

How about going in for a lo tech planted setup which is self sustaining as much as possible, with little intervention/maint required from your side once its setup? I'm halfway thru doing such a setup, its been 2 months. Its very low cost also.

@adive: definitely going to try low tech... I'm afraid it won't grow any plants though...
@kristian: Definitely going to look out for gold rams... petco rarely has them though...
