I'm really new in planted tank. I have a newly planted (established tank) 50 gl. The pH in all my fish tanks are 7.4. The KH is 120 ppm. I only use a DIY CO2 that only produce 10 bubbles per minute. This morning (5 am) I check the pH and it was only 7.1. According to CO2 chart, I should have enough CO2 for my plants. How can this be?? I read many articles and postings suggesting to use 2 bottle DIY CO2 for a 50 gallon. And many people in this forum have bubble counts more toward bubbles per second and not minute.

I'm very sure that I miss something here because 10 bubbles per minute is pathetic for a 50 gallon. I was just gonna add one more bottle and put more yeast in the solution and now I'm afraid to get a pH crash.

I know that the plants produce CO2 also during the night. But I don't think that the amount produced by the plants and my slow DIY is sufficient.

This maybe a stupid question. I was planning to get a pressurize CO2 system. But now I'm kind of confused why I only need so little CO2 in my tank. So what's the use of a pressurized system.

I would retest the pH. Then distontinue the DIY co2 and retest the pH tomorrow. Something doesn't make sense.

YOu should need 45 bubbles per minute or so for a 50 gallon tank.

For more info on pressurized co2, and a bit on DIY co2, take a look at my web site

How new is the aquarium Ninoboy?

Do you have any large pieces of driftwood in the aquarium?

The tank is 7 years old. But it just got new plants and DIY CO2 3 weeks ago.

And yes, I do have a large driftwood in the tank. Maybe it plays a role lowering the ph. However, if te pH is lowered by the driftwood, is that mean that the water contain more CO2? Or the CO2 chart doesn't apply anymore.

If it is a new piece of driftwood, the wood could be leaching tannic acid into the water, thus lowering the pH.

The co2 chart wouldn't apply anymore if the pH has been lowered because of driftwood.
