LIGHTING my 5.5 gallon tank suggestion

Hey how should I light my 5.5 gallon rimless 16 inches long and 8 inches wide tank, I wanna stay VERY cheap could I use a desk lamp or something like that? has anyone done this with any success. I'm estimating I will need about 24+ wpg so any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

24 Watts per gallon or 24 watts total?
24 wpg would be like 125 watts total which would be insane on a 5 gallon tank.

I have a 5.5g where I took a stock AGA with an incandecent light. Bought another light socket that machted the one already in it. Then drilled a hole on the other end of the light box and installed it so that it faced the other one. I bought two compact flourencent bulbs form the Walmart fish department and put them in. There is enough room for both of them so that the tips don't touch eachother. I am no sure what the wattage is on those bulbs but I have been able to grow just about anything that I have tried. IT is real bright and with the tank being so shallow I think it is more then enough light.
