Help with when power goes out!

What to you all do?
I have a canister filter how long can that be off?
Also the main tank how long before thing go bad?
Is there a time period as to turn over water every so often?

Thanks
John

get a battery-operated air pump, so the oxygen doesn't get depleted. I've seen them online for about $10. You just want something to keep the surface moving so the fish don't suffocate. After about 6-8 hours, I'd dump the water trapped in the canister filter and let fresh in. If you have a heavy fish load, keep an eye on ammonia buildup.

Other backup power otpions are uninteruptable power supplies (UPS) often sold for computers, or auto power inverters. Just to give you some ideas.

I have a battery operated air pump for each of my tanks and I try to do daily water changes of 25% or so (more if I have time), just to keep the wastes from building up too badly and to keep the temperature in the range that the fish will be comfortable in. (I usually have to watch this more if the power goes out in the winter than in the summer, but in a heat wave, adding slightly cooler water might be worthwhile too?).

UPC's are great! I once ran two small tanks for a couple days on a small $40 UPC. Just the filter. However, the UPC will beep every 15 seconds, so if the tank is in the middle of your living room, your s.o. may go postal on you.

It's UPS, not UPC.

My old UPS beeped every 5 seconds... -__-

I got as you all said a battery-operated air pump and a UPS it works great now that is a big load off my mind. So if the power goes off and I am I work I know the tank is ok that the ups is powering the canister and the air pump is as there.
I got both as the rule of two heaters if one my go out the other is there.

Thank you for all of you helping us.

Thanks
John

As to an actual experience:

A few years ago, a hurricane near-miss knocked a tree down on a power line outside our subdivision - bent over like 6 poles! So we were without power for 26 hours!

After a few hours without power, I began "turning over" the water in the tank by pulling out some with a pitcher and letting it gurgle as I poured it back in. I did this about once every hour or two.

That's all I did. Oh yeah - then I bought a battery operated pump the next week just in case it happened again.

All my fish were fine. I didn't do anything with the canister filters.

Will the same thing work for you? I don't know. But a few hours without power (which has happened several other times) doesn't seem to be anything to worry about.

Unfortunately some outages are worse than others. Simple aeration either by battery pump or manually dumping pitchers in will work fine but I've had 3 day outages since keeping fish and they were also in the dead of winter with freezing temps. That poses some more difficult problems. I've had week outages before, but before I ever kept any fish.

I know it may be over kill for some but I saw out there as solar panels to charge batteries.
That is a way to run a small 12v pump or 12v air pump day and night.
As to what size for all I do not know it just a idea.

Thanks
John
