Trimming Giant Vals..

How do I go about trimming giant vals? Some of them are REALLY long .. I have them in a 55 gal. can I just cut a little off the top?

I cut mine at the waters surface at about a 45 degree angle.I just did that very thing last night.Some were 3 feet long!

I cut mine. Sometimes the leaf will start to yellow and die back at the cut, or get BBA at that spot- but its okay with me, I just keep cutting, new leaves will replace the old ones fast enough if you end up cutting it all the way back you'll still have too much.

I do the same just cut some back last night. I go about 2" or so below the surface because they grow so dang fast.

yea, i have to cut mine once a week. They grow like nuts even though i add little fertilizer. Here's mine prior to trimming.


I have trimmed the vals 1 inch from the surface so that I can try to grow a gloosostigma lawn in the front. So far, it seems that I MUST have co2 injection and fertilizer for it to grow because they arent growing fast at all.

Hey are those my vals I sent ya? Sorry about the dumb mistakes, did they arrive ok? I'd like to see some pics!

I trimmed them sort of to the side, sometimes just straight across. They are stunted once you cut them like that, and they eventually die/become overcome by GSA. They do last a long time before they die however, and it might encourage new leaves to grow.
