How to take care of algae in a low-tech tank?

I've already posted in the algae forum but it doesn't get read much, so I thought I'd try here. If you don't run CO2, you don't dose, and you have pretty low light, how do you deal with algae? I have green spot algae in one tank and the other looks like hair/thread algae (?). It's kind of brown, so I might be wrong.

With no CO2 or dosing the only thing you can do is a complete blackout for several days (like covering the entire tank with a couple of trashbags for 3 or 4 days). You'll need to repeat this every time the algae comes back.

Your other option is to dose. I recommend EI and since your tanks are all small (unless this is your new 55) Excel will be relatively cheap.

I actually have Excel, but I was going to use that on the 55. The thing I am concerned about is that I have shrimp coming in the mail, and I've read that excel is pretty iffy when it comes to inverts. I am wondering, though, should I really dose since this tank is being lit with a 28W CF desk lamp? I am thinking that blackout is probably the best way to go, since my roommate is an idiot and opens the shades on that window every day to check on his car. I'm pretty sure I got algae because of direct sunlight.

When doing a blackout, how does air get into the tank? Obviously, the filter will still be going, but since there is no light, the fish and plants would both be dependent on surface agitation to get oxygen. If there is no fresh air over the tank to get into the water, how will it work? Or is it ok for 3 days?
