Phosphates

I've started dosing macros every other day using EI method for my 30G diy CO2, 3 w/gal planted tank. I'm dosing 1/4 tsp KNO3 and 1/8 tsp potash every other day. Using Seachem Flourish for micros on the off days. No Phosphates dosed at all. My levels are 6-10 ppm naturally. Is that enough, too much? What can I do to correct if not? 50% w/c on the 7th day with no dosing on that day.

If, and that is IF they are really 6-10ppm naturally, then sure, no need to dose them.

But that assumes they are that and consistently above say 1ppm.
Is this from a water report or your test kit?

DIY CO2 is the achillies heel in the set up. and if the PO4 is really that level.

Ok, I'm not sure I understand your reply but........... every time I test, and I just got done, they're at 5+. I don't understand it. My tap is 0. Where would they be coming from? Anyway, is it possible to overdose Phosphate? Is too much bad? I've read and re-read the instructions on my test set. Tested and re-tested. Could my test set be bad, it's brand new. I kinda puzzled!

I've a question to add to your question ... are you testing 0 phosphates at the tap with the same test kit, or is that figure from the water utility?

Same test kit. I do realize that fish feeding will add a certain amount of Phosphate but can't imagine the amount would be that great.

It can be that high if you over feed combined with the phosphates out of the tap. Many people dose ONLY K2SO4 and not any KNO3 or K2HPO4 becuase their nitrate and phosphate levels are sufficient just from fish food and poop.

Ok, what is the target Nitrate level? I understand that Phosphate is 1 ppm or higher and I think I understand that 5 or 6 is not detrimental. My nitrates are 5-10. Should I dose them?

Yes, you should. It's possible your plants aren't taking up PO4 because there's not enough CO2 and or NO3 present for them to do so.

Most test kits aren't good at reading 5-10 ppm NO3 anyway so dose 10 ppm by weight then retest PO4 after 3-4 days and see if it's being used.

I dose 10 ppm with KNO3 and let the fish dung take care of the rest of the Nitrogen needs.
