I've started a 20L low light tank for some Apistos and was wondering if anyone has ever used Java Moss as a ground cover. How did it look? How do you start it off? Weigh it down with pebbles? Wil it work as a ground cover? So many questions.

I believe it would work, others have tried it out before.

for a 20L though that would be a LOT of moss, would be interesting, though.

Look at the pictures here to see this guy's shrimp tank, he ONLY has moss in it, so you can sort of get a feel of how yours might look:

There is also a LOT of discussion about Mosses over at

From what I have seen, they would be the ones to ask about all your moss needs

I have a LOT better luck with aquatic plants than with houseplants ... mb this is a sign.

Java Moss can cover anything you want, so the answer is yes!

I just set up a 10g tank for some badis badis and I really like the look of that java moss. Do you think its attached to something or did they get it to somehow stay down on the substrate?

It works all you have to do is push strands of moss into the substrate. The only problem is that they collect detritis.

I recently saw I show tank at a LFS that made extensive use of Java Moss as ground cover, with spectacular results. It appeared to be a rather low light tank, but was lush and green with Java Moss (among other plants). I was so impressed I bought a couple clumps of the stuff in an attempt to duplicate the effect. So far the best way I've found to keep it in one place is to attach it to something with fishing line until it takes hold. I've got one clump attached to a piece of lava rock. With another clump I'm trying to cultivate a carpet type effect by "sewing" it to a sheet of black plastic window screening with fishing line. I'm hoping it will take hold and creep out all across the screen. It's still very much in the experimental stages, but is already looking nice.
