I just got some drift wood from my LFS, it the type has the base on it, I soaked it for a few days and boiled it even though I was told by LFS I did not need to, it should have been done already? It looks great in the tank, but if I touch it all kinds stuff comes off it, It looks like wasted food, but I know it not wasted food, because this tank has no fish in it yet. Could it be alge, because the gravel and rocks have some alge on them.

When I got my first driftwood for my tank, the clerk that I bought it from told me that a white fuzz would grow all over it for a little while, but that it would eventually go away, which it did. Don't know why it does this, but it didn't last very long, and now my water and my tank are very clear.

I had the same experience before. I did not boil the my driftwood though. There were some hairy stuff all over the driftwood after a few days in the tank. I just wiped them off and they were all gone after 2-3 weeks.

If the wood is hard to the touch but still has particles coming off it it is probably just algae.
