Question making my own driftwood

could I just take a dead branch off the ground and use it as driftwood? could I also take a living branch, let it dry out, and then use it?

It wouldn't be driftwood if it isn't from found in drifting waters.
I would find a dead branch, and either boil it or soak it for a while. Heres a nice FAQ about driftwood
