Hello EveryOne,

I've been keeping Freshwater fish only tanks for a little while and so far so good. I am setting up a planted aquarium and wondering if what I have done so far will be good enough for low to moderate light plants. The tank is a 55 Gal. I upgraded the Lights with 2X55W Kit from AH, I have regular gravel, and an Emperor 400, and a Penguin 330 HOB Filter. I removed the Carbon from both filters, Including Filter Cartridges and added sponges to the outlet to reduce water agitation. I had some Java Ferns and Java Moss in the tank since it was setup; they havenít grown much but have stayed green. Will this setup work OK?

Hi Alex, welcome to the Planted Tank!

Sounds like your setup will be fine. Some thoughts that come to my mind at this late hour:

Add many plants. The more the better. Especially fast growing ones. Especially in the beginning. Gives you good leverage over algae.

Consider some form of CO2 addition. This helps to grow plants big, fast and green.

Consider getting a Nitrate test kit. With lots of plants, NO3 levels can bottom out, which is detrimental to plant growth, and sometimes leads to algae outbreaks.

Seems like you know about the problems of surface agitation in a planted tank.

Good luck with this adventure, there is a lot to learn, and a lot to enjoy.
