is this safe????

hello all
i was just woundering, i was walking through home depot today and saw some natural slate tiles they had on clearance for 5sq ft for $5.
i thought i could do alot of things with this but wasnt sure if it was safe?
if not what else could i use, granite?
opinions are appreicated.

its flooring but the package says its natural slate and i opened a box it looked very clean and no adhesives or anything

Sounds fine. Just wash it real good with water only before you put it in your tank. Make sure that there isn't any residue on the slate and that residue doesn't come off the slate if you rub it real good. Basically make sure it isn't coated with anything (to protect gloss or something from high walking traffic), and that its just pure slate.

its real dull not glossy or anything it looks just like natural slate dull and alittle powery just from being shipped and handled all the time.

I bought a slate floor tile from home depot and cut it into smaller rectangles with an angle grinder and a dimamond wheel. I use it to tie riccia to. No problems to report.
