Hello all, First off here are my current tank readings and specs:

90G Filled 3" short of the top
Eco Complete and River gravel as a top layer
96 WattX2 CF AH Kit
Small Plant load now 1 Med Amazon, 5-6 Banana Plants, and a couple small bunches of microsword and half a Corkscrew val (thanks to my hatchings turtle)

3 RES Hatchlings
4 Red Tailed Sharks
2 TinFoil Barbs
15 Tiger Barbs
1 Gold Algae Eater
1 Candy Stripe Pleco

Tank is 3 1/2 weeks old a cycled ( I used already established tank water when I started the tank as well as already used filter media for the first week in conjuction with my Fluval 404.

PH 6.7
KH 4
Amm 0ppm
Nitrite 0ppm

I don't have a phosphate of pottasium test kit, I think I need one.

Ok now the problem. I have green algae starting to grow on my large piece of driftwood as well as tiny tiny specs starting to show on the glass. Now this just started right after I added the new CF lighting. I am wondering if my problem is

a) I need more plants to compete for nutrients in such a big tank
b) I need a larger cleaning crew
c) I need to fertilize with flourish, P, K

Sorry for the long post I will put my tanks specs in my sig.

thanks

steve

Hi Steve,

Most new tanks go through periods of algae growth, so I wouldn't just yet suspect something is wrong. One thing though, you should indeed add more plants. Fast growers, like Ambulia, Wisteria, Rotala, Ceradopteris, Hygrophila remove nutrients from the water column and supress algae growth. Consequently, some ppl call them "Algae busters".

Regarding test kits, you should probably get a Nitrate and Phosphate test. Not sure about turtles, but they might send your NO3 levels through the roof? There are no easy potassium tests available, so K is just dosed in regular intervals, to get a target level of about 10 ppm.

You really should wait with adding any fertilizers until things stabilize. With those few root feeders that you have it would make things worse.

On the other hand, once you got those Algae busters, you might want to think about adding a little bit of CO2. I know you have pH problems, so you need to be careful, but with addition of baking soda it should be doable.
