50 watts too much?

I have a small 20 gallon aquarium I decided to set up, but I needed a light, so I bought a HOT5 ballast. It has two 25 watt bulbs, but will that much light in such a small tank with no CO2injection be too much? I am worried I am going to cause algea problems.

When I bought the light I kinda thought about the two watt per gallon rule, but it really isn't accurate because of the small size of the tank. If anyone has any experience with this sort of thing, some help would be appreciated.

BTW, I was thinking about adding CO2 in the future, but will 50 watts be too little?

With no CO2 you will almost certainly have algae. 50 watts is plenty for most plants, provided you have decent reflectors and the proper spectrum bulbs, of course.

In college....so no aquariums for a while.....
