I bought a AguaClear power filter today for my first Aqua garden tank, I'm not sure if it's the right thing or not, also bout the substairte I got home with, the store did not have florite but had Pure Latraite. The bag says 1 oz per 1 gal. don't seem like enough to me, now what????

Yep the aquaclear will do just fine! What model is it? What size does it say it is for? Does it say it's flow (probably in gph)?

You can't just put laterite in your tank as your substrate. You will need to put some regular gravel on top. Otherwise the substances in the laterite will leak into the water in your tank and cause all kinds of trouble.

I would add enought laterite to make about a 2 inch thick bed. Then add about 1 inch of regular gravel on top of that!

In my 10 gallon, I added half the box to the bottom 1/3 of the gravel, and my plants are thriving!

Has anyone had any long-term experience with substrates--over two years? For the first 18-24 months, I was continually throwing away buckets of plants. Now, at 36 months, the growth is just "ok". Anyone seen the Laterite balls/pellets that were available a few years ago. Those would be handy for insterting into the existing set-up, rather than a complete break-down.
