newbe 75 gallon?

Hello folks. Little back ground. I have several years of keeping CA/SA cichlids. Im purchased a standard 75 gallon tank off craigslist. I orig, wanted to keep a reef tank but time and money is a big issue with 6 kids. so I want to do a planted tank. I also plan to use the following equipment:

AC110 filter
ML Emp 400
heater
Nova Extreame 48" 2 bulb t5HO saltwater light (10k and acintic bulb)
100 pounds of grave
some driftwood

FISH
I would like a school of:
Corys (10)
Hatchets
A few schools of tetras or barbs
A few display fish (angels or gouramis)
I think I would like snails for alg control
Suggestions?

Plants:
Im an open book. Any and all suggestions would help?

LIGHTING:
What bulbs would you suggest for the light fixture above would you suggest.

CO2
I do not plan on using a CO2 system

Substraight
I was told at a LFS that just gravel would work. Should I add something under the gravel to aid in plant growth?

What do yall think. Any and all suggestions would help.

Hmmm...I'm new to this thing as well Big B. I'll be watching to see how ya do. I just posted about introducing schooling fish to my tank. This is my first planted tank. My wife and I have done 4 different reef tanks but the stress levels and price just got to be tooooo much.

I would start with substrate: depends on the gravel size, smaller is better. Check the stickies under Substrates section for an intro. Root tabs will certainly help, you can buy Osmocote+ DIY tabs from people on TPT for a fraction of 'brand' names.

You can certainly use your existing light, I would switch actinic bulb for either another 10K or for a ~6,500K.

Check out members' journals and the tank gallery, take notes of the plants you like, find their names and look them up. The WTS section of the forum is a good place to get plants. Don't overlook the RAOK section: you can load up on a ton of plants for a nominal cost if shipping.

As all if us, you will learn as you go. Don't be afraid to ask questions. This forum is a great community and a huge library of information. Use it.
