Is it polite to ask for a RAOK

I had a member on this board respond to by pm to me after my offer of free shrimp was over.
My question is : Is this a polite thing for this person to have done?

I was thinking it was quite rude when he asked me to raok. I thought a raok was supposed to be offered NOT asked for. Come on people chime in on this.

I will not say who did this. I am sure the person will read the replys and know what is up from here out.
Thanks for your replys in advance. TOM

Did they know your free offer ended?

Did they ask "Can I be in line next?", or "Do you have any more free shrimp?"
I think this is acceptable practice...depending on the wording.

I don't see a problem with people asking. It is easy enough to say no.

The person knew the offer was over.

Here is the first pm names left off
Hi ... I know you said all shrimp are spoken for but I would love to get my hands on some of these if it is still possible... I am just now trying my hand at the shrimp keeping and figure if I can have heathy ghosts then These should be my next step so if you see any way for me to get some of these for the offer you previously listed please let me know!!!

I informed the person I aready gave 30 shrimp away, and that if he wanted some they were $1 per The person then responded

I thought if I could get some free ones I would be willing to pay shipping but sorry if I was going to pay $1.00 a piece I would just buy cerries.

Thanks anyway

Then he sent me this pm

If I can get you a few dollars for shipping would you be willing to raok the shrimp?

I was like what is this.

It's in bad taste, but easy enough to just say no. Gifts shouldn't be asked for, they should simply be given....RAOKs are like gifts in this respect.

Sounds like another example of how the RAOK has gone awry. I have people ask me for freebies and I've not ever offered a RAOK. What happened to the days when you expected to pay for a good or service, and freebies were nice but not expected.

Sounds like your guy has been the recipient of several RAOK's and has become accustomed to them.

Regards,
Robert

I go with the idea that if the person didn't know the raok was over, then asking is fine... after all, how would they know otherwise?

On the second hand... a lot depends on how you 'closed' your raok.

If you said something like 'No more free shrimp.', then it might be appropriate if someone PMed a question if you would be willing to sell them some, but NOT really respectful if they were asking for free when you arn't giving any more away.
However, if you said something like 'No more for now.' then it would be decently acceptable if they asked if they could be put on a waiting list if you ever deside to do it again.

Really I think it all depends on the wording of the request as well... A polite asking if you have any more you want to give away, or a blunt push to get something for free.

I guess it would all have to be considered on an individual basis.

Wow... while I ramble a lot of replies came in... lol

With the wording you show, I do think the person comes off a little like a 'gimme-for-free' kinda person.

My thoughts: NOT respectful.

The whole

"I thought if I could get some free ones I would be willing to pay shipping but sorry if I was going to pay $1.00 a piece I would just buy cerries."

Is a little snotty. My reply would have been.
"Well then go buy cherries. And stop asking for handouts!"
After he mentioned he knew you have closed the offer he should have not pushed the issue.

"I've not ever offered a RAOK"

I'm pretty sure anybody who has ever seen a post from Robert knows he does not believe in the RAOK system.

FWIW, I'd be put-off by the begging pm you received.

EXACTLY - I have people asking after sales close, even after I've clearly sold the only available item to another, but they still want something in case there is any left over, or the primary person changes their mind. I don't think there's anything wrong with them doing that, and either I tell them sorry -no right away, or I make them aware of the situation and I string them along for a day in case the primary buyer does fall through, which does happen about 20% of the time. if that one portion I offered is large, and I know the plant grows fast, I'll even split it up for both people, and throw in a few extra clippings to make up for the loss. sometimes people will ask in hopes you'll offer it to them directly the next time you have a surplus, instead of later offering it in public, and that's cool with me too

You just can't expect everybody to have class, and this confirms it .I wouldn't have replied to his request,he thought of it as a shot in the dark ,Either he will get some "cherries" or he wont.
Not replying to his request might have made him realize that he was out of line, but I highly doubt it.

Wow Lots of different ideas on this. Thank-you for posting your feedback.
Let's hear what a few more folks have to say on this.
