Smile New To The Game

Hey guys and gals!

I've decided to get a tank for my home office. I don't really remember how I made that decision, but its been made. I've been scouring craigslist for the past few weeks trying to acquire a decent sized tank for cheap and am closing in on one. Its probably going to be in the 40-50 gallon range. I've had tanks before, but never this big and never with live plants.

I think I am going to use a layer of Eco-complete (because that's what I've read is the best) topped with a layer of play sand (because I like the look). So, where do all of you buy your substrates and plants from? I live in Santa Clarita (Northern LA County). Does anyone know of good local shops around here or are the best prices online?

Any tips you would give a noob starting his first planted tank?

Thanks,
Chris

Welcome to TPT!

You're in the right place for your first planted tank. Spend a little time reading around and you'll find all kinds of good tips and tricks. A lot of members sell plants here, but are wary of selling to noobs so you will need to participate around here a little before buying.

Sand is best bought at a home improvement store. Keep in mind that play sand is very fine and can cause clouding and other issues. Pool filter sand is used a lot due to its larger grain sizes and it is more prone to stay where its at instead of moved about by the slightest current or movement.

Best tips I can give:

1. Go ahead and plant heavy from the get go
2. Patience, patience, patience.

Thanks for the advice, guys. Outside of members here, are there any good sites that sell decently priced plants?

Pet smart.. I'm not a fan of big chains but I find it a little bit easier with store bought plants sometimes. I got a healthy set of s.repens there but since ur in cali u can purchas here on theforums everyone has goodies every now and then... Look at the for sale.. And message the sellers some of them Are more than happy to help u with ur many questions and purchAses. I've learned a lot here.
