better packages: bought vs RAOK

Which has been better: the packages you paid for or the packages you get for free in a RAOK? Almost always it's the RAOK's for me. I've paid for some nice packages, and I've gotten some misidentified RAOKs that wasted my time and money, but almost always the RAOKs are far better than the purchases. I don't know why that is. You would think the free stuff would be crappier than the stuff that costs money! For example, I've paid $15 for a couple threads of moss tied to a dumb metal screen that I don't want in my tank, and I've paid nothing for a giant clump of equally cool moss. I've had spectacular plants that I never thought I would own given to me, while I've paid good money for plants that were misidentified, half dead, and clearly emersed-grown. Maybe when people are giving stuff away, they are happy to stuff packages as full as they can, while people in the 'profit mentality' try to keep packages as small as possible to make/sell more of them. But it's beyond that if you consider the misidentifications and crappy quality. Weird. Just wondering what other folks have experienced. I'm about ready to give up on sales and stick to sharing 100% through RAOKs!

I think it depends on what one appreciates. someone whos fanatical about their tank would likely not appreciate surprises, while someone with a facination with plants in general may love a new stem or five as a surprise.

Personally many plants ive traded/swapped are not available locally and they have made the hobby more interesting. turning my scaped tank into a jungle is something else, but as long as i enjoy it and my fish /shrimp dont complain, who cares
