rock question

I'm new to this...I ran a few reef tanks for several years but it was something I gave up when my job situation was in upheaval - reef tanks are not an easy possession to move from place to place. Anyway, I was thinking of setting up an aquarium again, have been absolutey stunned by the quiet peace and beauty of the planted tank pics I have seen on this site.

My question. I see a kind of yellowish or gray rock used in a lot of the planted tanks shown on this site, for example, here:

What is this rock and where can I find it? It doesn't look like ordinary building materials and I have not seen it in my local well stocked aquarium stores (I live in NYC). Another question, where do those big pieces of wood I see in some aquascapes come from? If they are collected from the nearest swamp, how are they cleaned and de bugged?
