Turning a rimmed tank into a rimless tank?

Hello, I got a 15 gallon tank with a ugly fake wood rim and I want to change it into a rimless tank. I know this can be a safety hazard at some point, but I really don't like the rim and I cannot purchase an actual rimless tank. Is this possible and is it easy to flip a rimmed to a rimless? Thanks.

It is possible and not very difficult to de-rim a smaller tank. Search this site for "de-rimming" or google "de-rimming site:plantedtank.net".

Also check out the tips I posted here. (Scroll down to post #11.)

Nice job man! Can I remove both top and bottom rims without worrying about structural integrity? The 15 gallon I have is really old, dated in the late 1990s. Will age of a tank matter in a DIY rimless? Thanks.

Dated in the late 90's is old. I'll go break the news to my 15 gallon in the garage that its "really old". Maybe it will take retirement well.

LOL! I read the tag on mine, apparently it's assembled in 1987. How old is yours?

I don't know about the bottom rim, I would just just paint it black if I were you. The substrate will probably be deeper than the bottom rim anyway right?

You got a point, I think I'll leave the bottom rim be.
