55 Gallon Conversion

I was wondering how much weight could a 55 gal support in terms of rock and gravel. I've given up trying to keep a planted tank at home while away at college (my family doesn't have as much time as I do to maintain it, nor do we have money to keep a pressurized co2 tank). My brother picked up a few cichlids and really likes them and we were thinking of setting up a rocky/slate habitat for them in the 55. So my question is....

How many tiers of rock/slate could I put in a 55 gal before I have to worry about the bottom falling out?

Kevin, if you decide to put rocks, slates, etc ... and not sure if your tank can hold it. What I would do is use egg crates. Place them at the bottom of the tank, and then put your substrate over and then the rocks, slates, etc ... on top of the substrate. This decreases the pressure that the heavy stuff have against the glass of the tank. You could look at Jay Luto's 75g African Lake cichlids tank, link: Greenstouch.com
