Exclamation Amazon Sword Deteriorating!!!!

I'm having problem w/ my Amazon Sword for the past couple of weeks. It seems the leaves are getting fuzz algae especially at the upper edges of the leaves & also some curling on the older leaves. The leaves are also turning transparent . I do the E.I. method (1/4 teaspoon of KH2PO4,K2SO4every M,W,F & CSM+B Plantex every T,Th,Sat) & do 50% water-change every-week. I don't dose Nitrate because I have enough w/ the fishes I got (poopmachines ). I also have some GDA on the glass but mostly in the back. My lighting period is bet. 1PM to 10PM. Bytheway how often should the bulbs be change? I know mine is like more than a year old. I hope this is enough info. You guys have any suggestions? Or what deficiency I have? Thanks.

Are you running the 2 air stones all the time?Hope not.The only reason for air stones in a planted tank like yours is if the fish ever end up gasping at the surface. What does your replacement water test at for phosphates, etc.?Please describe the filter maintenance on both filters. And ,as always, pics of your set up would be nice as well.

Transparent turning leaves could be caused by the munchies of the Bristle nose plec... That is often the case when the swords start resembling Aponogetons...

deteriorating older leaves leads me to believe that some nutrient is lacking. Possibly nitrate, but its hard to tell without seeing a picture or getting more information as to how you're fertilizing the plants. Do you use plain old gravel, or something better, like fluorite, EC or ADA aquasoil? While your fish may be producing nitrates in the way of waste, I'm not sure if it provides any K(potassium) which plants also need and we usually obtain from dosing KNo3 or K2So4.

I have my dosing schedule on the main post. And I do dose K2SO4. I only have plain gravel w/ First Layer Pure Laterite 55oz. added 6months ago. The reason I haven't been adding nitrate is because my last test came up 60PPM before I did the waterchange. So the light have nothing to do w/ what Im experiencing right now? Thanks.

That looks like pleco work to me. If you see the BN scraping on your sword, that's probably it.

But how about those "black things" (ALGAE???) on the leaves? And i only have one BN Pleco, he can't possible do all that damage??? And the funny thing is this stuff started happening after I traded in my 1 4" SAE, coincidence???

The older leaves of all of the sword plants I have had continued to deteriorate as the new leaves grew in. I pruned off the old leaves everytime I did tank maintenance. They looked a lot like your photos. I'm not saying I didn't have nutrient problems, because I know I did, but the swords were being fertilized with Jobes sticks under them and they grew very rapidly. So, my impression is that what you have is normal.

Hoppy, how about the "black things"??? Do you know what kind of algae they are? They mostly grow in the upper part & upper edges of the leaves. The rest of the leaves from below that line looks normal. And also how long does it take for it to deteriorate like that mine seems to be days instead of weeks. Thanks.

Sword plants and such are heavy root feeders. Not sure what substrate you are using, but most likely it would improve things if you would enrich it sort of root tabs/fert sticks. Even expensive substrates like Flourite and Eco-C need to be enriched for these plants.

This will speed up growth and improve plant health. They will grow new leaves without the black diatom algae. The old leaves will die and things will look better.

The transparency and light green areas are caused by your bushynose pleco. Otos would be a better choice as cleaners, unless your other fishies will eat them.

Please read the signature rules in the announcement section and adjust yours.

I only have regular gravel w/ 55oz. of Laterite added 6mos. ago. Im thinking of adding root tabs, can you recommend one? I already have 4 ottos & am really skeptical that the pleco would do that much damage. Im planning to add 2 SAE to help w/ the fuzz algae i think thats growing in the edges of the leaves. I just change the lights to 4x 65W 6,700K. Noticed some improvement on the new leaves that are growing from my Amazons increases. I will watch a couple days to see if the lighting will help w/ my algae problem. Thanks.

I have pretty good results with Jobes sticks, as long as you bury them underneath a few inches of substrate (where the roots are) they work well, just don't add too many at a time and be aware of them when pulling plants and such. The "Ferns and Palms" variety is supposed to be the best, with NPK 16-2-6 iirc. The regular houseplant one has more Phosphates in it.

The expensive Seachem roottabs provide mainly micro nutrients, not much in terms of NPK.

Somewhere DIY roottabs are sold, but I don't have experience with those.
