How to move fish from hard water to soft?

In my cichlid talk I had a gold spot pleco for about a year. The water is quite hard from both my tap and the texas holey rock. As my cichlids have grown, they have been tearing his fins, so it's time to move him.

I'm moving him to my planted tank which has lots of drift wood so the water is softer. Right now I have him on drip, about 1 drop per 2 seconds.

How long should I do the drip before it's safe to put him in?
