old substrate

Just out of curiosity, why is it bad to use substrate that has been in storage for a while?

OK, I'll bite: why IS it bad to use substrate that has been in storage for a while?

IMO If you rinse it well there shouldn't be a problem.
It's not the the bags in in the LFS have a freshness date.

I would be careful of anything left wet, and stagnant, but a really good rinsing, and maybe a boil if you are particularly paranoid, should be fine.

Now if you are talking about the bags in the fish store that are "packed with beneficial bacteria" (certain salt water substrates). Those I would worry about, but once again a good rinsing should fix that.

Im not talking about wet gravel, this is gravel that was drained, dried and stored in my garage while I worked out of state

This is a good question - will any nasties build up while you store previously used substrate? If you dried it, I'd say there is no problem at all.

I actually store/stored wet, dirty substrate for a while and reused it without problems. I guess you could do the smell test - if it doesn't smell bad, like rotten eggs and such, it is probably okay to use.

I store it wet (in a plastic bag) to keep at least some of the useful bacteria... and I don't even clean it much before using, to keep some of the mulm. Usually I cover the used substrate with a layer of clean substrate.
