DIY co2 ruined my tank!

Hey guys... this morning my HC was covered with gooey bacteria from my DIY co2! How do I fix this?

Was your bottle too full and then the yeast/sugar mix bubble up through the line? I would try and gravel vac as much as possible, wipe off any bigger leaved leaves that you can, and do a 50% water change.

Ditto what Lycosa said, except I might even do more than 50%. Or do it a couple times over the next couple days.

Also you may want to build a DIY bubble counter (gas seperator) to keep this from hapening in the future.

were you injecting it into the intake of a filter?

I had like 4 inches in the botle! I dunno what could have happened! Maybe the line got clogged and then BOOM it squirted into the tank.

I just ordered pressurized co2 yesterday. This is another good reason to go pressurized!

Is there any way to remove it from the HC without uprooting it?

I was injecting it into the filter., but I don't think that caused this. I shook it up to activate it a little. Maybe that's what happened.

You might grab some ghost shrimp at your LFS, I hear tell ghosts are good at eating the slime from DIY CO2.

Well if you were injecting into a filter and shook it up and had a bit too muchyeast, then I think that is what happened. In my setup there is actualy water trying to escape back into the CO2 bottle (except for the one way valve), rather than visa versa, so the CO2 has to pressurize enough to push the water in the tubing back into the tank. I suppose it could still happen but probably less likely than if I was pulling the gas into a filter.

I just tore the tank down, cleaned everything and replanted. MY tank looks like crap! To say i'm pissed off is an understatement. I hope my cherries and HC make it.

Should I inject DIY co2 or just wait untill my red sea system comes it? Man I'm pissed!

i just bit the bullet and went pressurized too, man this will be much easier

you will get through it, keep going DIY co2 until it comes, then do a waterchange to get rid of the extra yeast crap

1) Too much yeast?
2) Did you use a gas separator?
3) Check valves help to prevent yeast muck from getting past it. It just clogs up the valve even though it's supposed to prevent water from flowing the other way.
4) If you stuck it too far up your intake, the suction from the filter might've helped suck the yeast into the tubing.

skiboarder72: In your gas separator, the tubing from the yeast bottles goes almost all the way to the bottom. The water goes maybe 1/2 up the bottle. The tubing from the separator is about 1/2 to 3/4" from the very top of the cap. I siliconed it in just to make sure.

This way, save for a huge explosion which shouldn't happen anyways, there's no way yeast can get into your tubing.

I just went pressurized co2 about a week ago. Best thing I did so far. I ordered mine from Rex Grigg. He has some of the best stuff you can get for the money.
