Keeping a filter "alive" even after a tank's been taken down.

So, I thought I should ask these questions since the semester's starting to come to a close, and I got to think about packing up and heading home to Hawaii on December 17th. Which means taking down my tank before I leave.

Question, is it possible to keep the filter cycled while I'm away? I will be gone for about a month, and will be setting the tank up again in January. Is there a way to keep the bacteria in the tank alive while I'm gone?

Also, it would be great if I could use some of the "used" aquasoil in January. Is there a way to keep the bacteria in that alive while I'm gone too?

not unless you ahve a way to feed it. If there is no ammonia or nitrates for them to feed off of they will eventually starve and die off. you would have to keep the filter set up with water. and maybe have someone drop a little ammonia in it every couple days.

If you're taking the fish with you then you could set up an automatic feeder. The food breaking down will cause ammonia for the bacteria to feed off.

Aquarium Automatic Feeders: Rondomatic 400

This one has 28 compartments and I suppose you could set the timer to drop once a day.
