I currently am new to plants and have a 55 gallon tank with some kind of fern, and a stem plant of some kind(forgive me I bought them at wal mart and am not sure of the type). My tank has a corralight 260 watt light with 7200 bulbs. The problem is that my fern has turned kind of brown along with black looking algea in my rock. The stem plant has black blotches in it that appear to be going through and eating the leaves. My fern used to grow rapidly and has scince stopped. When it grows a new shoot it is bright green for a couple of days and then later browns. I haven't yet taken any pictures but can if necessary. Thanks in advance Rich

55 gallons 260 watts of light. Do you have CO2? Are you fertilizing? You should check out my FAQ for some basic info. I'm betting that your plants are starving to death. I would recommend that you start by turning off half the lights.

Just a warning, walmart tends to sell what they claim to be aquatic plants. Make sure they are true aquatic plants. Don't ask how I know...

Nutrient deficiency, plants grown emersed adapting to submersed growth or snails are all possibilities. Some micro sword normally gets a brownish red tint, or it could be diatom algae.

Do you have nitrate and phosphate test kits? Are you dosing any plant foods? If so which ones, how often and how much? Do you have CO2?

21 ppm would be very soft water. Or did you mean degrees?

I meant dh sorry I am still new! But I will grow plants if it kills or breaks me lol. Started out everyone said get rid of the 2 18 watt florescent tubes that come with a 55 all-glass. then buy fert so I did both ,now co2 is coming with a ph monitor. I also purchased laterite to try and mix with current gravel then add more to the top...when will the money trail end lol
