Howdy -- I recently noticed that one of my banana plants is giving off a very fast stream of small bubbles. The leaf giving off the bubbles seem to be decaying away, but the rest of the plant is very healthy w/new growth. Theres about 3-4 bubbles coming out every second. Should I cut this leaf off? Whats going on here?

Thanks

Hey -- after being mesmerized by the tank for about an ~hour with the filter/air stone turned off, I noticed the amazon sword also letting off bubbles. The sword gives off a bubble every 2-3 seconds and the banana is still giving out bubbles but @ a slower rate with bigger bubbles.

Is this pearling?

Thanks,

Law,

It is not uncommon to get a stream of bubbles from a damaged leaf, this has something to do with internal gaseous exchange. I know this was covered in another post a few days ago, but cant seem to find it... Is it bad, depends... Not uncommon to see on pruned plants and a bad leaf hear and there... Should the damaged leaves continue, could be a issue, either something damaging the leaves or lack of a specific nutrient...

Pearling is similar, but you will notice the bubbles forming under the leaves...

Hey Jason -- thanks for the quick reply. I will prune the damaged leaves and keep an eye on the others. I knew the pearling was too good to be true. :P

Thanks,

I always thought the bubbles under the leaves were from plants below those leaves that were pearling. I have some hydrocoytle that forms large bubbles right on the top of the leaf. It looks like someone has attached half of a tiny inverted glass vial right onto the surface of the leaf. I have some unidentified plant that I collected locally that forms another vial of oxygen at the rosette (correct usage?) at the top of the plants where the leaves are growing close together. Very pretty I might add.

Bubbles can form on top of leaves too, just more common to be underneath... Depends on plant species, and my personal plants, etc....
