Dosing question...

40-60 Gallon Aquariums
+/- 1/2 tsp KN03 3x a week
+/- 1/8 tsp KH2P04 3x a week
+/- 1/8 tsp K2S04 3x a week
+/- 1/8 (10ml) Trace Elements 3x a week
50% weekly water change

This is how I have been dosing, this is for a high light aquarium...would you consider my tank high light?(Lighting specs in sig) Should I dose less? More? Plants are growing better than they ever have for me, but I am having a small GSA problem....Don't t-8s produce more light than t-12s even though they are less wattage? Oh yeah, I love the E.I. method though....A lot easier and no testing!

I'm not so sure that you have high light. What is the wattage of the T-8's?

Even if you DON'T have high light, EI is still O.K. to dose.

EDIT: And what kind of reflectors do you have on the lights?

I had the same gsa problem in my high light 20H that I thought I was never going to shake. Everything grew great, but I still got gsa on the glass and leaves. I had just about given up on it. Then, after reading some threads about remedies for it, I decided to bump the Po4 dosing up(doing about 1/4 tsp 3x week) and turned the Co2 up to where I thought it might be too high. No more gsa. Not to mention that fish and plants are all happy and healthy. Co2 is probably the key, but I've also heard Po4 gets rid of gsa.

The t-8s are 32 watts....for a reflector I painted the inside of my hood white, then put a mirror in the top of the hood....I know about the light having to go through the glass twice but I swear it is a lot brighter than it was with just the inside of the hood painted white... I'll ask again....Don't t-8s put out more light than t-12s? Ringram, I just started dosing 1/4 tsp of Po4 last week, I will see if it helps any, but I figure it's my co2(I use DIY) but I will be ordering my regulator soon and will be gettin ready to go pressurized!!

a 4' T12 puts out 40 watts, T8's are more effecient, not stronger.
I personally don't consider your tank high light.
Honestly, if all the problem you are having is some GSA, up the phosphates a bit and get more CO2 in there.
If things are going well for the most part, don't make drastic changes, you won't know what fixed your problem, or made it worst.

Depending ion your light cycle you might want to change that if the above 2 things don't help.

Isn't that how much energy the bulb uses? I thought lumens were more important...

You can go a little bit lighter on the dosing if you want.
Maybe 1/3 less volume than what you are doing.
You could also have a decent bioload and dose these amounts 2x a week instead.

I think the Achillies Heel of the tank is really the DIY CO2.
That's 90-95% of the algae issues.

GSA is really only addressed well with good PO4 and CO2.
PO4 we can rule out, you are already adding it.

So that just leaves CO2 and it's DIY on a largerish tank.......

Thats what I figured...can't wait to get a pressurized system.
Oh and by the way, the E.I. method rocks! I haven't used a test kit since I started and although I have a minor algae problem, plant growth is better than it was before...

Hi fellow NC'er!

If you have an extra $60 or so and are planning on going to a pressurized system, AES has the Azoo CO2 regulator on sale at a great price for $55.53. It's part number AZ19002. Pressure Regulator w/Solenoid

That's a very nice price for the Azoo, I use one in my pressurized set-up and have never had a problem with it.
