Hello planted aquarium experts,

I ordered from my LFS 2.5 millimeter black Quartz and received 1-1.5 millimeter quartz. I saw many recommendations for the 2.5 millimeter quartz. Too small quartz may "choke" the fertilized substrate and too big quartz had difficulties holding the plants...

One more input - I intend to use undergravel heating cables!

My question is - should I insist on the 2.5 millimeter or 1-1.5 millimenter is just fine.

I don't think you will have a problem with the size you have. I normally recommend a substrate in the 1-3 mm size. And if you have not gotten the substrate heater yet I don't think you should waste the money. They are good in colder climates but in Israel I think that most of the year you are more concerned about keeping the tank cool instead of heating it.

I'll second the thought on skipping the heating cables. Some folks use them, with some degree of success. However, when you consider the climate you are living in, they are not necessary. The money spent on the heating cables can certainly be put to better use!

Hi,

I am not going to use the heating cables for heating.... I want water cirulation in my aquarium in order to supply nutrients to the plants roots.

But let's leave this issue aside - my question was about the quartz size.

Could anybody answer this specific question?

But you have to consider that the heat from the cables will rise into the water column, basically warming the whole tank slightly.

Rex already did. 1-1.5mm will be just fine. Use that, or wait even longer for some 2.5mm to come in.
