scraping plant leaves......is it safe?

I still can't seem to prevent diatoms (tank has been up for 18 mths) from growing. While I ponder that ..... is it safe to scrub the stuff off plant leaves? Especially large annubius leaves (seem to look the worst over time). I use one of the algae pads (white 3" square ..common algae scrub pad), and scrub the brown off.

Am I going to eventually kill these plants. They look so nice - except the algae, and I really like them. Don't want to kill them.

What do you think? I have been doing it for a couple weeks now.

I've taken them out of the tank and used an old toothbrush on the leaves under running water from a tap. Didn't do one bit of damage to them. They're tough as nails IME.
